Why is there a South Asian specific Ideal Weight Range?

Skeletal frame and metabolic studies show that individuals of South Asian/Indian descent carry a significantly higher proportion of visceral body fat and experience elevated risks of metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, type-2 diabetes, and cardiovascular complications at lower Body Mass Index (BMI) and body weight levels compared to Western or Caucasian cohorts.

For this reason, clinical standards revised by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the World Health Organization (WHO) set the threshold for a healthy weight range in South Asians between a BMI of 18.5 and 22.9 kg/m² (contrast with the global WHO standard of 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m²). As a result, the upper boundary of a healthy weight range is lowered, making weight management targets tighter and more critical for health preservation.

The Role of Skeletal Frame & Wrist Sizes

Standard mathematical equations (Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi) estimate ideal body weights based on height and biological sex alone, without accounting for skeletal structures. However, someone with a fine skeletal frame naturally carries less bone and muscle mass than someone with a robust skeletal structure.
